UNL BASEBALL  CONCESSION STAND
The Capital City Kiwanis Club began the 11th season of operating the UNL baseball concession stand with a bang by working a double header and large crowd of noisy fans. The weather was cool, but the Husker bats were cold, losing both games to Washington on Saturday.  One of the improvements this year were new adding machines with a touch screen menu which made it easier to place orders and complete transactions much quicker.  Payment was by credit card only. It should be another great year if the Huskers can win some games.

TAX LIEN SALE UPDATE

The 2025 Lancaster County Tax Lien Sale was held Monday, March 3rd at Embassy Suites. The event was much like the past years but with a new check-in table process that worked very well. The coffee was hot when 18 CCK members reported for duty by 7am. Then we reported, alphabetically by our assigned holding company name, to the Lancaster County table to get our bidder's number and our seat assignment before going into the main ballroom.   There were more properties this year than in previous years, but the county people kept it moving along. The sale was over around noonish and we turned in our folders, validated our parking, and picked up our lunch money. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's sale! You earned $1800 for our club working at this event!!
FOSTER CARE CLOSET

Four CCK members participated in a service activity at the Foster Care Closet on March 10.  The group sorted a shipment of socks, placed them in zip lock bags, added a QR code, and scanned the bags for inventory.  Marilyn Scheinost, Mindy Vyhnalek, Sandy Scheinost and Cheryl Ross enjoyed two hours of "hands on" volunteering as well as socializing and learning more about the Foster Care Closet.
NORTH STAR FOOD MARKET

Pictured L to R: Cheryl Ross, Marilyn Napier, Kennedy Beebe, Morgan Young, and Joe James.

North Star High School has a Food Market event once a month throughout the school year.  During the 2024-2025 school year the Food Market was held on September 17, October 22, November 26, December 17, January 29, February 11, and March 18.  The last two markets for the school year will be held April 15 and May 13.  Student Council members handle unboxing/boxing, setting up, and distributing food at each table.  CCK volunteers Marilyn Napier, Joe James and Cheryl Ross handle registration and providing food sacks to students.  Any and all students can shop for free food from the Food Bank of Lincoln to take home.

2025 EXTRA MILE WALK FOR THE FOOD BANK OF LINCOLN

In early March a check in the amount of $4,000.00 from the YCPO Committee was mailed to the Food Bank of Lincoln to support the 2025 Extra Mile Walk. The Acklie Charitable Foundation indicated they would match funds donated to the Extra Mile Walk up to $200,000.00, so YCPO's donation ended up being $8,000.00. The YCPO Committee requested the funds be designated for the Back Pack Program (or equivalent) and monthly food markets. The 2025 Extra Mile Walk will take place at 10:00 am Saturday, April 26 at Northwest High School.
QUILTS TO THE MARKET AND EARLY HEAD START

On March 13, 2025 Julie Albrecht delivered 4 quilts and 4 afghans to The Market/LMEP and 5 quilts to Early Head Start.  The YCPO Committee hosted a Combined Shower for The Market and Early Head Start in 2024, and isn’t planning another combined shower until 2026.  Rather than waiting a year to give the quilts and afghans to kids who need them, Julie delivered them in person.  By next year she plans to have more!

KIWANIS SALUTE TO FFA

Capital City Kiwanis club hosted this year’s annual Kiwanis salute to FFA that was held at 6:30 AM, on March 25, 2025 at the Waverly Community Center. The 4 local FFA chapters that attended were The Career Academy, Waverly High School, Norris High School, and Raymond Central High School. Each chapter presented highlights of their current activities. The Lincoln Center Kiwanis Club presented $1,000 scholarships to two students. Kiwanis members from all Lincoln, Hickman, and Waverly clubs were present.  Capital City’s president Kathy Prochaska-Cue presided as Master of Ceremonies.
MARCH KEY CLUB ACTIVITIES

What a busy March for Lincoln East Key Club members!  Members are trying to wrap up their fleece blanket project—they were able to complete 34 blankets this month.  They are also working diligently to reach their goal for decorating Meals on Wheels bags—they are up to 583 for the year.  Eight Key Club members played Bingo with Legacy residents on one Saturday in March while another helped serve food at Peoples City Mission.
Highlight of March for Key Club was District Convention (DCON) which was held the weekend of March 21 – March 23 in Omaha.   Eighteen members (a record number) from Lincoln East attended.  Six members ran for three different District Board officer positions with two members elected.  In addition to electing a new District Board and handing out awards for the year, attendees helped to celebrate Key Club’s 100th birthday.  Lincoln East received a total of eleven club awards including outstanding awards for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Bulletin Editor, Faculty Advisor, and Kiwanis Advisor.  They also received the K-Family award which is only given to Key Clubs who connect with other K-Family clubs.  Six district awards were also given to East High Key Club District Board members for outstanding service with one member receiving three of those awards for her hard work.
