2025 CCK SCHOLARSHIPS

L to R: Jamie Tran, Madeline Scholl, Quinn Kment, Mary Lily Russman, Mikayla Brenner.

The Kiwanis Club of Lincoln-Capital City and the Capital City Kiwanis Club Foundation presented $1000 scholarships to five Lancaster County graduates at their meeting on April 22nd.   The soon-to-be graduates and their families were invited to attend the scholarship presentations and the recipients had the opportunity to share their future educational plans with everyone.
Madeline Scholl, from Lincoln High, received the Bob & Dottie Orshek Memorial Scholarship.   Bob Orshek had been a Lincoln attorney and member of Capital City Kiwanis for many years.    Madeline is continuing her education at the University of Nebraska in interior design and architecture.
The Al & Gwen Farmer Memorial Scholarship is for graduates who are pursuing a career in nursing.  This year we had two students qualify for this award.   Quinn Kment, from Waverly High, who will be attending NE Community College in Norfolk and Mary Lily Rasmussen, from Pius X, who will be attending UNO.   Quinn wants to become a flight nurse and get his paramedic degree.   Mary is interested in a degree in public health.
Two Capital City Kiwanis Club/Foundation scholarships were also awarded.    Jamie Tran, from Pius X, who will be attending UNL for a biology degree and Mikayla Brenner, from Norris High, who will also be heading to UNL, for an advertising and public relations degree.
The students are chosen based on their academic achievements as well as their service to their communities.    All applicants must be from Lancaster County and plan to attend a Nebraska college to be eligible for these scholarships.    The Capital City Kiwanis Foundation & Club Scholarship program started in 1977 and continues to help local students further their education.

FOSTER CARE CLOSET

Who knew sorting underwear could turn into an enjoyable task?
Six CCK volunteers (Linda Boeckner, Marilyn Scheinost, Sandy Scheinost, Mindy Vyhnalek, Marilyn Napier and Cheryl Ross) spent two hours at the Foster Care Closet on April 10 sorting a warehouse shipment of girl’s underwear so each package had 7 sets of underwear in a variety of colors.  Even though the group filled almost 4 totes, there were several boxes that still need to be sorted, so a service event in May is being planned.  If you are interested in helping at the Foster Care Closet please contact Cheryl Ross or Mindy Vyhnalek.

K-KIDS WRAP UP YEAR

In March the Pyrtle K-Kids visited the Country House, an assisted living facility near Pyrtle Elementary School.  The members sang several songs for the residents, like “My Darling Clementine,” “Home on the Range”, “My Bonnie”, and “Yankee Doodle”.   Then they visited individually with the residents and passed out artwork with positive messages which they had created in Art Class.
On April 29th they held their annual bowling party at Parkway Lanes to celebrate the great year they had in service to others.   The K-Kids enjoyed some bowling and had some snacks.

SLP CELEBRATIION NIGHT

Capital City Kiwanis members and guests celebrated the end of the school year and the achievements of the sponsored student clubs with a recognition program on April 29th. Five members of the East High Key Club and three Pyrtle K-Kids, plus one of their faculty advisors, Julie Dohman, attended the pizza dinner and presented highlights and comments of the service year just ended.

FOOD FORT GRANT AWARDED
A $5000 grant from the NE-IA Kiwanis District Foundation has been rewarded to the Capital City and Southeast Kiwanis Clubs to help purchase and refit a new bus for the Food Fort program. Sandy Scheinost prepared and submitted the grant and has been told the check is on its way.  This brings the total funding for this project up to $31,500 which is over 75% of the goal!    Micheala, Food Fort Director, and her crew are very excited and have already purchased a newer bus.   Refitting is underway!    The plan is to have a big reveal at the big back-to-school event they have each year.

IN MEMORY OF gLEN bAILEY

Glen L. Bailey, 75, of Lincoln passed away March 30, 2025. Born August 4, 1949, in St. Paul, NE to Warren Keith and Bettie (Hinkle) Bailey.
Glen learned to play the guitar in Vietnam and continued throughout his life. He played guitar with Three Cords and a Cloud of Dust. Glen loved to read and write poetry. He was a member of Capital City Kiwanis Club for many years, life member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV, and MOAA (Military Officers Association of America). Even though Glen did not attend many meetings in his later years, he always was one of the first to pay his dues to our club.
