HARVEST OF BOOKS

Eleven enthusiastic CCK members selected 216 books at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore on O Street to make the 2025 Harvest of Books Campaign a success!  Mary Cumming, Joe James, Sandi Lewis, Marilyn Napier, Marilyn Scheinost, Sandy Scheinost, Cheryl Ross, Al Vyhnalek, and Mindy Vyhnalek selected their books the morning of October 6.  Lois Mayo and Kathy Prochaska-Cue couldn't help that day so they chose their books earlier.  Participants recalled memories of their favorite childhood books, as well as books they had given their children and grandchildren, as they shared their love of reading with carefully selected 1st and 2nd grade books for young readers in Lincoln.

FOSTER CARE CLOSET

Five Capital City Kiwanis volunteers showed up at the Foster Care Closet on Monday, October 27, eager to get together for the group's monthly service event.  Sandi Lewis, Marilyn Scheinost, Sandy Scheinost, Mindy Vyhnalek and Cheryl Ross volunteered for 2 hours learning a new sorting process, setting up a production line, and getting to work on racks and boxes of girls and boys pajamas (an enjoyable change from sorting underwear).  Mixed in with work was conversation about football, volleyball, holiday plans and family events.   If are interested in joining the group, please contact Cheryl Ross or Mindy Vyhnalek.
Priority Items needed by the Foster Care Closet can be found at https://fostercarecloset.org/current-needs/   A link to their Amazon Wish List is located  Amazon Wish List

The new Foster Care Closet trailer is ready for action!   It will travel to towns across the state to help clothe children in need.

K-KIDS UPDATE

The Pyrtle K-Kids held officer elections at their October meeting.   The votes were close and they ended up with Co-Presidents again this year!  But we have done that before and it was great!   They made plans for the November 7th "Hats On" fundraiser.   The students are allowed to wear a hat to school, but must purchase a sticker for one dollar that is put on the hat.   The proceeds will be used to purchase toys for needy families this Holiday season.   Toy shopping will be done at the next meeting on Nov 11th.

OCTOBER EAST HIGH
KEY CLUB ACTIVITIES

East High Key Club members were very active in October.  Membership is up to 71 students. Service activities for the members:  5 volunteered at the Harvest Moon Festival, 6 served food at the Peoples City Mission, and 13 worked during the month at the East High Spartan Village organizing donations and keeping the space updated.  During fall break, 12 members worked at Roca Berry Farm.  This was a fundraiser for the club, and they earned $700.   14 members volunteered during Boo at the Zoo week.  They worked in the various booths passing out candy and running events.
Members also decorated 129 MOW Bags bringing the total number for the school year to 372.  In addition, during two meetings using old tee shirts and fleece remnants from last year, members made a total of 151 dog toys which will be donated to the Capital Humane Society.  AND, one last item-- four members who also serve on the Nebraska-Iowa Key Club District Board spent October 31-November 2 in Omaha at the first Unlocked Leadership Retreat.
