CAPITAL CITY KIWANIAN
JANUARY   2025

TIME FOR A CHANGE
Over the years our club newsletter, the Capital City Kiwanian, has gone through several changes.  It has evolved from a hand typed multi-page document that was copied and mailed out, to a sleeker, computer generated, one sheet full of photos and clip art that is now distributed on-line.  Sandy and Steven Scheinost have been the creators of the club newsletter since September 2010 and they believe it is time to change things up again.    The Club Runner software program our club uses provides a framework for the creation of a bulletin, so it seems only logical to use this option.   This transformation is a work in progress, but we hope you enjoy the new look!
PAST PRESIDENTS RECEIVE AWARD
Awards were given to Linda Boeckner and Steve Wisthoff for their time as president of the Capital City Kiwanis Club. A donation was made to the Nebraska-Iowa District foundation in their honor.

NO SOCKS, JUST BABY CAPS
On December 10th, Capital City Kiwanis member, Mindy Vyhnalek, delivered 56 babies caps to the Sewing for Babies organization.   Usually this is the time of year that our club would collect baby socks for the layettes this group makes for those who need assistance and we have helped to meet that need for many years.   However, due to such a successful sock drive last holiday season, the sewing group did not need any socks!  (Last year we delivered 966 pairs of socks which will last them about 2 years!)   They were still in need of some caps and onesies this year (since they struggle to find a good price on the cotton knit fabric that is used) so we switched the donation to caps this year and plan on adding to the effort in January according to the YCPO committee. HELPING THE HUB
The YCPO committee was asked to help The HUB in Lincoln provide some Christmas cheer to some young adults/youth getting help at the HUB, the young children of these young adults/youth and youth currently in detention.  Some Capital City members donated handmade Christmas stockings and the committee donated a case of lotions.  The Executive Director, Rose Buss and some of her staff organized a “stuffing” event on December 16th to fill the stockings with all the items they received.   Cheryl Ross and Mindy Vyhnalek attended and helped with the project.  There were about 100 handmade stockings stuffed at the event.   To learn more about the HUB, go to the hublincoln.org website. KEY CLUB ACTIVITIES
It has been a productive semester for the East High Key Club!  Their members worked on fleece blanket project during meetings in December and delivered 20 completed blankets to Cedars Youth Services and 20 to Peoples City Mission.   December 14th members volunteered at Santa’s Workshop/Wrapping party at the Peoples City Mission’s Help Center.    They added 82 more decorated MOW bags bringing their total to 452 for the semester!  On December 20 they along with Southeast Key Club members, they collected money for Food Bank at the East High-Southeast basketball game.   They collected $51 and 2 boxes of pasta.    In addition to all their service this school year, they are busy preparing and building for tomorrow.  The club received a $1400 grant award from the Youth Opportunities Fund which will be used to buy fleece for the on-going blanket making project.   They raised $1650 by volunteering at Roca Berry Farm and the Halfsy Marathon.   And five non-district board students were selected to serve on NE-IA Key Club District committees!

FOOD FORT BUS DRIVE
The Lincoln Food Fort organization takes their outreach services to the children who need their services.   They do this with a bus.  A modified school bus.  They feed kids who visit their bus with food for their bodies and their minds.   Michaela Akridge, Founder & CEO of this organization has shared that a newer, refitted bus would cost about $42,000.    As of the middle of December they were half way to their goal.     Capital City Kiwanis has decided to donate $5000 to their new bus campaign.     To learn more about the Food Fort mission, go to lincolnfoodfort.com.
